The beginning of our Winter season was unusually mild, and hopefully you were able to complete your outside home maintenance. Winter has definitely arrived, and here are a few tips to keep things warm and safe in your home. — Heating System — Set your heat to no lower than 55 degrees. The temperature inside the walls where the pipes are located is colder than the living areas inside your home. — Open the doors to unused rooms in your home to keep an even temperature throughout your home. — Insulation – Add some extra insulation in your attic to prevent ice dams. If too much heat escapes into the attic, it can warm the ice and snow on the roof. When it refreezes, it can cause an ice dam, which can lead to water damage inside your home. – Add weather stripping around doors and caulk windows to prevent heat escape. — Water – Learn how to shut off your water in case your pipes freeze; this may help to prevent water damage. Most of all, enjoy the Winter season — escape to Florida!

Fall is here, and it’s time to get your house in shape for the cooler months ahead. Autumn is the best time to take advantage of moderate weather to repair any home damage before the first frost sets in. Here are some ideas that will keep your home running in peak condition all winter long. – Caulk around windows and door frames to prevent heat from escaping. Caulking and sealing openings is one of the least expensive maintenance jobs. But, if you’re not sure caulking is a sufficient fix for your heat loss problems, please call D-S Exteriors, 630-665-1849 . Dan or Steve will come to your home, check your windows and doors, and give you an honest assessment of the situation. – If you are physically able, clean your gutters and downspouts. Dress appropriately for the job, and when performing outside maintenance on your home, it’s a good idea to let someone know what you are doing. Accidents do happen! As far the gutters…. clean out the debris, flush them with water, and inspect the joints. Clogged gutters are a major cause of ice dams – a common occurrence in the frigid winters! If you feel your gutters may need replacement, call D-S Exteriors. D-S works throughout the fall months to service your home needs. Enjoy the beautiful days!

Fall has officially arrived, even though the weather is more summer-like. It is the time of year to think about ways to conserve energy in the fall and winter months ahead. One way is to replace your drafty, old windows with energy efficient windows. We provide low-e (emissivity – see previous blog) windows, which will reduce heating costs and conserve energy. Call us before the cold weather sets in, and let us explain how low-e windows will provide a year-round benefit!

D-S Exteriors provides Low-E glass for your windows, if desired. We hear the term, Low-E, but are not always sure what it means. In “Low-E”, the “E” stands for “emissivity”. Low-emissive glass has been treated with an invisible metal or metallic oxide coating, creating a surface that reflects heat, while allowing light to pass through. Windows treated with Low-E coatings are proven to reduce energy consumption, decrease fading of fabrics, and increase overall comfort in your home.

Insulation keeps your home warm in winter, but can also help to keep it cool in the summer months. When you are sprucing up your home with siding, it is an ideal opportunity to add insulation, and add to the energy efficiency of your home. Also, D-S Exteriors provides upgraded, low-e glass when installing your energy efficient windows and doors.
